Siren Storm Lisa Papademetriou Books
The book was ok, but my main problem is that it took a while to get a plot together. The details included were great, and gave me a great view of the setting. Well, the end was un expected. Where the heck did that come from? Gretchen just magically had a crazy power? I really felt like the storyline ended because it had to end. It could have been longer, but it just ended. Things just didn’t fit after the book Will read, and it never came to a good close. And why just magically kill Asia? She was a great character! And I just can’t get over demonic Gretchen?

Siren Storm Lisa Papademetriou Books Reviews
Will may live in the most beautiful summer scene imaginable, Wolfang, NY. (OK, it doesn't exist in real life, but just picture the Hamptons.) He still has very normal parents, an old but dependable dog, and a boat. But the boat is sort of the problem. The boat belonged to his brother, Tim, and they don't have Tim anymore. A year ago, Will and Tim went out in the boat, something went wrong, and only Will came back. Will doesn't even have the memory of any of it. He just knows that he was found on the beach, the boat was found at sea, and Tim was never found at all. As the anniversary of Tim's death creeps up, Will and everyone around him can't help noticing that things are getting stanger.
A teen from a family with its share of troubles is losing his mind. He talks about things that don't make sense, sees things no one else sees, hears thing that no one else hears. A strangely beautiful girl is hearing all kinds of secrets from the people in town, even though no one knows a thing about her before she appeared in town last summer. Will's friend Angus is hearing things in his job at the newspaper that the town won't allow to be printed. Can't scare off the tourists, ya know. Will's childhood friend, Gretchen, the girl next door, is so close, and still so far away. People are leaving donations at the museum in gold coins from the 17th century.
No matter how hard he tries, will can't let it go and can't piece it together. Something important is riding on him understanding all of it, if he could only figure out WHAT.
This book is exactly what it promises to be- eerie and compelling like a Siren's song. The characters are enticing. The story line is unexpected (but not to the point where the reader wants to say "huh?") In fact my only minor quibble with the book is that more of the story than I would have liked has to be revealed by one of the characters in a near-lecture format. Until then, this was absolutely 5 stars.
Teens are going to like it. Due to the cover, probably more girls than guys will check it out, but guys could probably identify with Will if they tried the book. Very reasonable to shelve for 7-12. It feels edgy all the time (cheers from the teens), but is not laced with language or situations that parents object to (cheers from teachers.)
Why I read this I love mermaid/siren tales, especially those that are a bit darker in nature and this one looked to be so.
Plot The author does a fantastic job of melding mythology into a modern day setting. The story had a nice balance of intrigue, relationships, and fantasy elements. This story is darker and less focused on romance, which was a great relief as romance in paranormal YA can sometimes be stifling and ruin a good underlying plot. Instead it focused on friendship, on loss, on the darkness that can consume a person. And I of course loved all the mythology that played into the story and created a truly unique novel.
Characters The characters in this book are blended well into the story. They have stand out features, but the plot takes precedence and there's this urgency that pushed them into action. I really loved the characters because of their flaws. There's Gretchen, who is the girl next door to Will who is self-conscious, doesn't always make the best decisions, but tries her best. Then there is Will, who is still suffering the loss of his brother and is marked with a scar that reminds him daily of that night.
I enjoyed the supporting characters as well, Asia, the strange girl who Will cannot get out of his mind, Kirk - a supposedly crazy teenage boy who acts like he is on drugs and spouts nonsense about angels and voices. And Angus, the town gossip, who is always there trying to get the scoop.
Relatability I think those who enjoy stories based in mythology but set in modern times will enjoy this one. And anyone who needs a break from YA Para-romance but still wants a good paranormal novel.
Cover Commentary Haunting. Not quite the way I picture Asia though.
